History of Grama Panchayat

Palamel Grama Panchayat: An Overview

Bordering Pathanamthitta and Kollam districts, Palamel is a scenic landscape adorned with hills, hillocks, wetlands, and paddy fields. Located in the southeastern part of Alappuzha district, this region is an integral part of Onattukara, a land rich in cultural heritage. Place-name historians suggest that the name "Palamel" evolved from the phrase "Palakkum Meku" (meaning 'West of Palai'). The panchayat spans an area of 25.60 sq. km and is characterized by more than 40 small and large hills.

Geography and Heritage

The elders of the locality recall that this area was once blanketed by hills, valleys, thickets, massive trees, and dense creepers, and was inhabited by wild animals. This is further validated by several place names within the panchayat that hint at its wilderness past, such as:

  • Pulikkunnu (Leopard Hill)

  • Pannithadam (Boar Valley)

  • Kadamankulam (Deer Pond)

  • Mailadummukal (The Peacock-Dancing Hilltop)

  • Karimankavu (Black Deer Grove)

Demographics and Livelihood

Historically, people from various social strata lived harmoniously in this region. Agriculture and its allied sectors have been the traditional backbone of the local economy and livelihood. The Rowther Muslim community originally migrated here from Madurai, Tamil Nadu, for trade and commercial purposes. They integrated seamlessly into the local society and have played a pivotal role in the progress and development of the region.

Socio-Cultural Legacy

Palamel has been the cradle of numerous social and cultural movements. It is a historical land sanctified by the footsteps of Mahatma Ayyankali, one of the foremost leaders of the Kerala social reformation movement.

To foster reading habits and knowledge among the public, the 'Subhash Library' was initially established at Kavumpadu. Today, this institution is owned by the panchayat and functions as the Shri. K. Govinda Pillai Memorial Central Library.

Other notable cultural and educational institutions under the panchayat include:

  • Mammoodu Kavitha Library

  • Adikkattukulangara Janatha Library

  • Cultural Centers at Ulavukaadu, Kudassanad, and Panayil

Above all, Palamel is a land completely untouched by religious or communal discord, standing as a proud testament to communal harmony.
